The purpose of the pupil premium review is to use an evidence-based approach to assess how the school is spending its pupil premium funding, and identify the most effective interventions and overall strategy.

By the end of the review the school will have:

  • An independent evaluation of the relative effectiveness of the spending of pupil premium funding.
  • An action plan making suggestions about how to improve aspects of provision and thus outcomes for disadvantaged pupils
  • Access to a range of materials that can support the school to help improve the quality of its practice.
  • Identified opportunities to share good practice within and beyond the school.
  • External validation to support school self-evaluation.
Participants who will have an interest in this event will include headteachers, deputy headteachers, assistant headteachers, education advisers, school business managers, virtual school heads, school improvement officers, governors and anyone responsible for co-ordinating or implementing Pupil Premium use.

If the optional day 3 is booked at the same time as days 1 & 2, the school will receive a £50 reduction off the total cost.

Off-site day

Preparation for school visit

Review of information sources:

  • School website
  • Pupil premium statement
  • OFSTED dashboard
  • Previous ofsted report
  • School self evaluation of pupil premium spend including range of strategies

Pre-visit conversation with headteacher and agree composition of itinerary for school visit.

Post school visit

  • Produce a written evaluation of the effectiveness of spend
  • Present action plan of suggested targets/ strategies for improvement

In-school day

Use evidenced based approach to reviewing effectiveness to include:

Meetings with stakeholders

  • Headteacher
  • Chair of governors
  • Governors with responsibility for pupil premium
  • Subject leaders for English/Maths
  • Selection of parents / carers
  • Speaking to pupils

observation of practice

  • Learning walk / observation of specific interventions

Internal data analysis

  • Intervention data as well as attainment and progress analyses

Day 3 (optional extra)

Between 2 and 6 months following the school visit an optional follow up review to be conducted consisting of the following:

Half day school visit

  • Meet with key staff and review data for recommendations made from last visit.

Summary report

  • Shortened evaluative summary of impact and progress based on previous recommendations
