Literacy Support For Newly Qualified Teachers In The Primary School

This course is aimed at NQTs or recently qualified Primary teachers. It will cover the literacy expectations for each year group; effective planning of a literacy unit and how to deliver good or outstanding literacy lessons. Reading, writing, phonics/ spelling, speaking/ listening games and activities will be given for all Primary age ranges. Accelerating the progress of all children will be explored.

Detailed course outline and session time table

Session 1

  • Literacy expectations, end of year expectations for each year group: Nursery to Y6.
  • Planning a literacy unit – a manageable approach.

Session 2

  • Planning a Literacy unit continued.
  • Reading: how to teach reading; good practice; practical games and activities.
  • Writing: how to teach writing.

Session 3

  • Phonics and Spelling.
  • Speaking and Listening.
  • Cross-curricular links.
  • Assessment for Learning:  tracking the progress children are making and using that assessment  to effectively plan further learning.
  • Literacy Book Scans:  what you need to know.

Session 4

  • Delivering good or outstanding literacy lessons.
  • Accelerating the progress of all children: what to do with the under-performing groups of children.

Tutor information and feedback

The tutor is an experienced Primary Literacy Consultant. She has taught across the Primary age range; Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. For twelve years, she worked as a Primary Literacy Consultant for a local authority until becoming an independent consultant in 2012. Her areas of expertise include raising standards in literacy, the teaching of reading and writing, subject leader support and accelerating progress in literacy. She is known and respected for her clear and succinct advice on what the next steps should be to improve the teaching of literacy. She is passionate about improving the teaching of literacy in Primary Schools and delivering lively, valuable training to enable teachers to deliver first class literacy for all children. She has an amazing track record with the company, with participants consistently evaluating the provision as outstanding.
