Teaching Reading and developing reading for pleasure

Participants will explore the methods used to teach early reading. They will discuss the role of the daily phonic session and encouraging the ability to decode words. The course explores the skills of deduction and inference and developing higher order comprehension skills. The course looks at developing reading journals, it explores the different types of reading and ways to develop the culture of a reading school. Participants will explore the role of book talks and ways to develop home-school links. The course also looks at the role of text based units in the teaching of reading; how to use a quality text to teach spelling, punctuation and grammar; using poetry to enrich reading experiences; developing a reading for pleasure ethos in the Primary School, and the skills needed to become a fluent reader.

Tutor information and feedback

The tutor is an experienced Primary Literacy Consultant. She has taught across the Primary age range; Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. For twelve years, she worked as a Primary Literacy Consultant for a local authority until becoming an independent consultant in 2012. Her areas of expertise include raising standards in literacy, the teaching of reading and writing, subject leader support and accelerating progress in literacy. She is known and respected for her clear and succinct advice on what the next steps should be to improve the teaching of literacy. She is passionate about improving the teaching of literacy in Primary Schools and delivering lively, valuable training to enable teachers to deliver first class literacy for all children.
