The services are designed to meet the requirements of the individual school.
The SEF Checking Service
The SEF checking services are provided in three versions, standard, intermediate and enhanced. The standard service is completed electronically whereas the intermediate and enhanced services involve consultancy visits to the school.
Improving quality: We check each section of the SEF and make recommendations about improving quality, clarity, and the fairness and accuracy of judgements. In the process, we help you improve the school’s underlying self-evaluation systems and evidence base. In the standard SEF checking service, checks are made against the RAISE and the school development plan. In the intermediate and enhanced SEF checking service, a consultant works with you to collate the necessary evidence and support you with writing the SEF.
Quality criteria:
We consider the following when evaluating the SEF:
- Are judgements and evaluations in the SEF clearly expressed and accessible to inspectors and others who may read it?
- Is the SEF suitably concise?
- Is writing evaluative, not descriptive, and are significant judgements explained and exemplified as appropriate?
- Is the SEF internally consistent?
- Does the SEF fairly and accurately identify and explain the strengths and weaknesses of the school convincingly, including any differences between the school’s view and the RAISE online data?
- Are the issues for improvement in the SEF explicit, focused on the most significant weaknesses, particularly relating to achievement, standards and provision, consistent with the school improvement plan, and do they provide a clear and practicable basis for action?
- Does the SEF include all the elements requested by OFSTED.
